Thinus van Schoor is Managing Director of Value Chain Solutions and one of the founding members. As a seasoned executive, his experience ranges from project management, corporate and investment finance, to supply chains and agricultural end-to-end business leadership.
After completing his Bachelor’s in Engineering, he furthered his studies and obtained a masters in Commerce (1995). He holds accreditation from MIT, University of Pretoria and INSEAD.
Thinus is a certified Supply Chain Professional (APICS Certified) as well as a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP Certified). He is furthermore registered as a Professional Member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and a member of IoDSA (Institute of Directors in South Africa).
During the course of his 17 years at SABMiller Africa and SAB Ltd he was appointed CEO of Agricultural Sourcing and Processing business.
Thinus is passionate about Africa and its people. The experience he gained as Capital Investment and Project Lead as well as Planning and Supply Chain Director adds to his understanding of developing sustainable and competitive value chains to unlock the continent’s potential.
DR PG STRAUSS
PhD Agricultural Economics
PG Strauss started his career in 2001 in the banking industry where he was responsible for end-to-end value chain finance with respect to primary agriculture, agro-processing, logistics and retail. This provided PG with the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of the agro-food value chain.
In 2009 he was offered the opportunity to join SABMiller where he successfully managed various sourcing portfolios and value chains of both SABMiller as well as ABI (bottlers of all Coca-Cola products). This provided him with the opportunity to gain invaluable experience in terms of managing operations and value chains on the African continent as well as across all other continents and countries in which SABMiller operated.
In 2013, he joined the VKB Group to act as CEO for various subsidiaries in the group and was responsible for supporting strategy development and execution across the group. As part of his responsibilities, he had to manage and support an oil crushing business, an animal feed division, a group logistics division, a grain milling division as well as a food retail division.
In 2016, PG joined Value Chain Solutions in the capacity of Director, given his expertise and experience in value chain management, procurement, risk management, agro-processing and logistics.

Neels Barkhuizen started his corporate career after completing his articles at Coopers Theron du Toit (Chartered Accountants and Auditors) now PwC.
He then moved to the private sector filling various roles in the Merchant Banking, Financial Services, Construction and FMCG sectors as a Financial Executive until he started with The South African Breweries Group in 1992. During his 25 years tenure at SABMiller, he was responsible – on an executive level as a Financial Manager, Company Secretary and Finance Director – for several business units and subsidiary companies. His career covered Marketing, Sales, Distribution, Supply Chain and their Agriculture, Processing and Hops businesses at SABMiller. During the last three years at the group, he spent his time as the Head of Finance for the SABMiller Africa Agriculture, Processing and Hop Farms subsidiaries.
His experience and expertise further include the areas of corporate & project finance, mergers & acquisitions, supply chain, vendor finance, company debt restructuring as well as primary and secondary distribution. He was also a regional SAP implementation head and led the credit workstream implementation during the set-up of the Shared Service Centre at the South African Breweries. His knowledge and experience in agriculture, raw material processing as well as supply chain span across the South African and African operations.
MSc Agricultural Economics
Michael Day holds a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Stellenbosch as well as an executive accreditation in Machine Learning from MIT Sloan School of Management. His academic performance includes multiple accolades including graduating cum laude and then going on to win the award from the Agricultural Economics Association of South Africa (AEASA) for the best MSc thesis in South Africa.
As a result of his agricultural upbringing, Michael is passionate about the agro-food industry and its ability to progress through directed factual analysis informing business and investment decisions. His wealth of knowledge on all levels and across industries in Africa uniquely positions him in a global agricultural system which continues to seek focused growth opportunities in Africa.
Since joining Value Chain Solutions in 2017, Michael has focused on establishing the VCS data ecosystem offering while also being involved in multiple project successes for various clients both in South Africa and the rest of Africa.
